The man and the monkeys.

Task I: read & comprehend the following story.

One day a man who made caps went to the market to sell them. It was a long way to go. The man passed by a long river. When he was in the forest, he decided to rest a little, as the day was very hot and he was very tired.

The man saw a large tree. He decided to rest under it.

As the sun was very hot, the man put on one of the caps on his head and put all the other caps on the ground under the tree. The man had lunch, then lay down and soon was asleep. When he woke up, he could not find the caps.

“Where are my caps?” he cried. He could not find them anywhere.

Suddenly he looked up. And what did he see? He saw many monkeys in the tree, and each monkey had the man’s cap on its head!

“Give me back my caps!” cried the man. But the monkeys could not understand the man. They laughed, jumped and played with the caps.

The man asked and asked the monkeys to give him back his caps, but the monkeys didn’t understand him. They only laughed.

The man got very much angry with the monkeys. He took off his cap, threw it on the ground and cried: “If you want my caps, you may take this one, too!”

And do you know what the monkeys did? They took off the caps and threw them on the ground!

That’s how the man got back all his caps.

Certainly, he was very glad. He quickly took all his caps and went away.

The Bear in School

Task I: read & comprehend the following story.

One day a boy found a brown bear-cub in the forest. He was very little and looked like a puppy. The boy carried him home.

Every day the boy went to school. The bear-cub went with him and waited for the boy in the field.

At first the other boys were afraid of the bear-cub, but soon they became great friends. Many of them brought food to school and gave the bear-cub some bread and butter.

The bear-cub lived with the boy for a long time. But one day he went to the forest and did not come back. Everybody was very sorry for the bear-cub.

Many years passed. New schoolboys came to the old school. One very cold winter day the door opened, and a large brown bear walked into the classroom. The boys were afraid. Some ran to the door, others jumped out of the window.

But the bear did not touch the pupils. He walked up to the fire and warmed himself. He felt quite at home. He was very glad to get into such a warm room. He sat by the fire, and then walked up to the table and ate some bread. Then the bear walked out of the house.

Some young men of the village came with their guns to kill the bear. They soon found him but did not kill him. They saw some marks on his skin and understood that the bear was the old friend of their schooldays. They let him go back into the forest.

Task I: read & comprehend the following story.

First of all, I must tell you about myself. I am thirteen and I am in the third class at a Grammar school in Manchester

What a terrible day! I woke up late and didn’t have time to eat my breakfast. I couldn’t find my books or my school cap. At last I found my books in the bathroom; and at last, I found my cap — my dog was playing with it! I was nearly late for school.

The first lesson on Monday morning is maths. What a ter­rible way to start the week! Mr Green, the maths teacher, took our homework. He saw that my exercise — book was dirty. He was very angry and gave me a bad mark for it.

Then he gave us some tasks to do. I sat next to Jane, who was fat and not very pleasant — but very good at maths. I asked her to tell me the answers, but she didn`t want.

The next lesson was French. I like French. It’s nice to be able to talk to somebody in another language.

At last, it was eleven o’clock: time for break. Nell gave me a piece of cake to eat with my milk. She also gave me her Latin homework to copy. I think she likes me and she’s a nice girl.

After break, we had two lessons of Latin! They are bad: I hate Latin!

Mr Williams punished me for talking to Nell.

Task I: read & comprehend the following story.

At 12: 30 pm was time for lunch. I was very hun­gry! I sat down at the table feeling very happy because the Latin lessons were over. And then I saw what was for lunch: meat pie, boiled potatoes and cabbage. I hate vegetables! But I ate a little, because I was so hungry.

Then I went into the playground with my friends Pete Sharp and John Ford and we played football.

After lunch we had a history lesson. I don’t usually like history, but I liked this lesson very much. We learned about the Battle of Hastings in 1066. We were on holiday in Hastings last summer. I said I would bring some photographs of our holiday to school the next week.

At three o’clock it was time for my favourite lesson of the week: games. We played a very exciting game of football but it ended in a draw.

After school at four o’clock, Pete and I bought some sweets and I went to his house to listen to music.

Mum was angry because I didn’t arrive home till half past seven. She doesn`t like when I come home late. My supper was cold.

I did my French homework but I didn’t do my history homework. There was an interesting programme on television.

Healthy Food

1. Eating is fun, especially when you are hungry. Most people have a favourite food. Some

people enjoy eating sweet things like cakes, chocolates and ice cream. Other people enjoy

savoury foods like cheese and meet. Enjoying eating is our body’s way of making sure that is

gets the things it needs to work properly.

2. Food helps us to keep warm, talk, run and do all the other things we do. It helps us to

grow and stay healthy.

3. Vitamins also help us to be healthy. Scientists name vitamins after the alphabet. All of

them are very important, for example: vitamin C keeps our skin and gums healthy. It is found in

fresh fruit and green vegetables, such as oranges, blackcurrants, lettuce. Brussels sprouts and

spinach also contain a lot of vitamin C.

4. Vitamin D helps our bones to grow strong and hard, and we are able to make it for

ourselves if our skin gets enough sunlight. But we can also get vitamin D if we eat fish, milk,

butter, cheese and margarine. Some people buy pills and tablets containing vitamins. But most

of us get more than enough of them from our food.

With the words” Elementary, my dear Watson…”, the most famous detective of all times,

Sherlock Holmes, starts to explain something to his friend., Dr.Watson. That phrase has now

entered the English language.

Sherlock Holmes first appeared in 1882. He became famous in “The Adventures of

Sherlock Holmes”. After that came the whole series of books about him.Many thousands of

books about Sherlock Holmes are still sold every year.

Who invented Sherlock Holmes? Arthur Conan Doyle was his inventor. He was a doctor.

In 1882 he moved from Scotland to England to set up a practice. One of the doctors he worked

with, Dr. Joseph Bell, was the model for Sherlock Holmes’s friend, Dr.Watson. Conan Doyle’s

medical knowledge was a great help to him in his detective stories.

Conan Doyle started the fashion of the detective story, which goes on.

And what sort of man is Sherlock Holmes? We learn a lot about him from the stories in

which he appears. He is a quiet man, who only speaks when he has something to say. He

smokes a pipe (he has a collection of them). He plays the violin. He carries a large magnifying

glass. He lives at 221B Baker Street in London.

If you go to London, you will not be able to find 221B Baker Street. But instead, you can

go to a pub called the “Sherlock Holmes”. In that pub there is a room exactly like Sherlock

Holmes’s room at 221B Baker Street as described in Conan Doyle’s stories.

1.The Earl of Sandwich lived long ago in England. He was a fanatic about playing cards.

He didn’t even want to stop playing to eat a meal and refused to put his cards away. So his

servant invented a quick meal for him. He put some meat between two slices of bread, so that

1.William Shakespeare, the greatest English writer of drama, was born in 1564 in

Stratford-on-Avon. We don’t know everything about Shakespeare’s early life. But we know that

he studied at the Grammar School in Stratford, and that he became interested in the theatre when

he was still a boy.

In 1586 Shakespeare went to London, where he worked in the theatre for some years

before he began to write his own plays.

2.Shakespeare soon became well-known in London literary circles. Every play that he

wrote was good news to the people of the capital. Queen Elizabeth I liked Shakespeare’s plays,

and the actors were often invited to play before the Queen and later before the King Jamesa

own theatre the famous Globe Theatre.

A Long Way to Travel for Your Dinner.

A1This is an Arctic tern. It is not a very big bird. It is only about six inches (16 centimetres) from its bright red beak to its tail. But soon this small bird will begin a wonderful journey. It will fly from one end of the Earth to the other – a journey of about 12,000 miles (18,000 kilometres).

A2 The tern spends the summer in the Arctic, but it cannpt spend the winter there. It is too cold and there is no food. If the turns stays in the Arctic, it will die.

A3 In autumn the Arctic tern will leave the North Pole and fly south across the equator to the South Pole. When spring comes again in the northern hemisphere, the tern will come back to the Arctic.

Sometimes a book can help change history. One book that certainly did was “Uncle Torn’s Cabin”, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The Northern states had abolished slavery. (2) They were willing to let slavery’ continue in the South. Stowe was determined to make people understand that slavery was evil. (3) She told the story of characters like Tom, a courageous old slave, Simon Legree, a cruel man who buys Tom, and Eliza, who makes a dangerous escape to freedom. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” was published in 1852. (4) People reacted strongly to the novel. In the North many people were finally convinced that slavery must be ended. In the South many people were very angry. (5) By 1861 the two sections of the country were at war. The Civil War, which lasted until 1865, finally brought an end to slavery. Of course, the Civil War had many different causes. (6) Stowe met President Lincoln in 1862. As Lincoln took her hand, he said, “So you’re the little woman who started the big war.”

In the Cave

In the corner we saw three huge stone boxes full of lumps of gold and crudely made coins. (1) There must have been thousands of them, more! We all went over and picked up the metal letting it fall through our fingers, and back into the box.

A. Two people never see the same rainbow. Each person sees a different one. It happens because the raindrops are constantly moving so the rainbow is always changing too. Each time you see a rainbow it is unique and it will never be the same! In addition, everyone sees colours differently according to the light and how their eyes interpret it.

B. A rainbow is an optical phenomenon that is seen in the atmosphere. It appears in the sky when the sun’s light is reflected by the raindrops. A rainbow always appears during or immediately after showers when the sun is shining and the air contains raindrops. As a result, a spectrum of colours is seen in the sky. It takes the shape of a multicoloured arc.

C. Many cultures see the rainbow as a road, a connection between earth and heaven (the place where God lives). Legends say that it goes below the earth at the horizon and then comes back up again. In this way it makes a permanent link between what is above and below, between life and death. In some myths the rainbow is compared to a staircase connecting earth to heaven.

D. We all believe that the rainbow is arch-shaped. The funny thing is that it’s actually a circle. The reason we don’t see the other half of the rainbow is because we cannot see below the horizon. However, the higher we are above the ground, the more of the rainbow’s circle we can see. That is why, from an airplane in flight, a rainbow will appear as a complete circle with the shadow of the airplane in the centre.

E. In many cultures there is a belief that seeing a rainbow is good. Legends say that if you dig at the end of a rainbow, you’ll find a pot of gold. Rainbows are also seen after a storm, showing that the weather is getting better, and there is hope after the storm. This is why they are associated with rescue and good fortune. If people happen to get married on such a day, it is said that they will enjoy a very happy life together.

F. You can never reach the end of a rainbow. A rainbow is all light and water. It is always in front of you while your back is to the sun. As you move, the rainbow that your eye sees moves as well and it will always ‘move away’ at the same speed that you are moving. No matter how hard you try, a rainbow will always be as far away from you as it was before you started to move towards it.

G. To see a rainbow you have to remember some points. First, you should be standing with the sun behind you. Secondly, the rain should be in front of you. The most impressive rainbows appear when half of the sky is still dark with clouds and the other half is clear. The best time to see a rainbow is on a warm day in the early morning after sunrise or late afternoon before sunset. Rainbows are often seen near waterfalls and fountains.

Sydney Wildlife World is an Australian zoo. Although it was opened in 2006, the zoo has become famous all over the world.

The Australian zoo consists of 10 parts where visitors can see different kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and insects. In fact, there are more than 6000 creatures in the zoo. Some of them belong to the most endangered species on the planet.

In Sydney Wildlife World visitors can watch kangaroos, touch a snake, make friends with koala bears and meet Rex, who is the biggest salt water crocodile in captivity in the world.

There is always something happening in the zoo- exhibitions, shows, festivals. Visitors can take part in various activities and have a lot of fun.

Sydney Wildlife World is open every day except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

I like animals. I can see wild animals at the Zoo. It is interesting to watch monkeys, elephants, crocodiles, foxes, bears and other animals.
I like films about animals. I have read a lot of books about bears because I like bears most of all.

The book teaches us to be kind and friendly, honest and brave, to be a true friend.

Text 13. Seasons and Weather in Russia

Winter, spring, summer, autumn are the seasons of the year.

December, January and February are winter months. The weather is cold. It usually snows. The days are short and the nights are long. The rivers and lakes freeze and we can go skating and skiing.

March, April and May are spring months. Spring is a nice season. The weather is warm. There are many green trees in the streets and in the parks. The sun shines brightly. The birds sing songs everywhere.

June, July and August are summer months. In summer it is usually hot. The sky is blue. The days are long and the nights are short. There are many flowers in the parks and gardens. There are many berries in the forests.

September, October and November are autumn months. The weather is cool. It often rains.  The days become shorter and the nights become longer. The birds prepare to fly to the South. You can see yellow, red and brown leaves on the trees.

Text 14. Winter Holidays

I like winter because I have long winter holidays. They start on the 29th of December and last till the 10th of January.

The weather is usually fine. There is a lot of snow everywhere.

During winter holidays I have a lot of free time. I don’t have to get up early and go to school. I like to skate and ski.

Sometimes I go to my country house and meet my friends there. We spend a lot of time in the open air, go to the forest, build snowcastles and play snowballs. If it is cold, I usually stay at home. I read books, watch TV or play computer games.

Also I like my winter holidays because we have a happy day – New Year’s Day on the 1st of January and I get presents.

Sometimes my parents and I travel during winter holidays. Last year we visited Suzdal. We stayed in a hotel for three days. I saw many places of interest in Suzdal: wooden houses, beautiful churches and monasteries. It was a very impressive trip.

I like my winter holidays very much.

I like summer holidays very much. In summer it is warm and I have a lot of free time in the open air. I usually spend June at the seaside.

In June I usually go to a camp. I like spending time there. We play sports, swim in the river and go to different clubs. There is a forest near the camp and we always make a campfire once a week.

In July my parents have a vacation and we go to the seaside. Usually we go to the Black Sea. I like to swim in the sea and spend time on the beach.

In August my parents go to work and I go to the country. We have a country house where my grandparents live. I help them in the garden. I pick up apples and plums, water vegetables. We often go fishing with my grandad or pick up mushrooms in the forest. I have a lot of friends there. We ride bicycles or play games. I have a nice time in the country.

Summer is my favourite season and I enjoy my summer holidays very much.

Last summer I went camping with my dad. We took rucksacks, two sleeping bags, a tent, a map, a compass, torches, and, of course, matches.

First, we got on a train. When we got off the train, we walked through the woods to the lake. Then we put up a tent and made a campfire. We caught a lot of fish and cooked it on the fire. I slept well and mosquitoes didn’t bite me.

I enjoyed the day very much.

People need vitamins to stay healthy. The word «vitamins» comes from the word «vita». «Vita» means life in Latin. People get vitamins from food they eat. Vitamin B is necessary for the nervous system. Vitamin C is important for bones and teeth.

To stay healthy you should eat healthy food. But unhealthy food is tasty because it has a lot of sugar or fat. Also it has no vitamins. For example, there is no vitamins in Coke, chips or fast food.
